CANADIAN MAGAZINE PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES
WINNERS OF NATIONAL MAGAZINE COVER COMPETITION

BC publications take top honours in field of 250 entries

Toronto, ON, February 18, 2002 – Twenty-seven of Canada’s best magazine covers have been selected by a panel of well-known Canadians as part of a multi-million dollar campaign aimed at promoting Canadian magazines to Canadian readers as “the genuine article.” The winning entries can be seen as part of a cross-country exhibition entitled: ON THE COVER: A NATION AS SEEN THROUGH ITS MAGAZINE COVERS, which opened in Toronto today with subsequent stops in Montreal and Vancouver.

ShoreLines and Beautiful British Columbia shared top honours for “best of show”, while 25 magazines took top spots in twelve separate categories. Winners included Canadian Business, REALM, Gardening Life, Adbusters, Azure, Exile, Abilities, Canadian Geographic, Toronto Life and NUVO. The competition was administered by the Canadian Magazine Publishers Association and was open to member magazines from across the country.

“ShoreLines is a small, independent literary magazine run out of a school, while Beautiful British Columbia is a major tourism publication run by a provincial ministry,” said Mark Jamison, President of the Canadian Magazine Publishers Association, the industry association responsible for the competition. “In many ways, these two winners are reflective of the breadth and diversity of the approximately 300 CMPA-member magazines that will be published across Canada this year.”

The winning covers were selected by a panel of judges that included television host and author Evan Solomon, recording artist Susan Aglukark, television host Vicki Gabereau, publisher Douglas Gibson, journalist and documentary maker Francine Pelletier, political cartoonist Roy Peterson, photo journalist Jacques Nadeau and advertising executive Jane Hope.

"Like a sprawling, collaborative serial novel, Canadian magazines chronicle the unfolding story of our country, giving voice to diverse communities, energizing new ideas, inspiring, informing and astonishing millions of people every day," said Evan Solomon, author and journalist. "The poet Miriam Waddington once said of Canada, 'We look like a geography but just scratch us and we bleed history.' Nothing scratches the surface so well and so thoroughly as magazines, which is why this exhibition is so important."
